Treadmill

BANG goes the alarm, and we're up, and we run around
Trying to get ready for the day.
Coffee in our cup, drink it up while we brush our teeth
Trying hard to brighten up the gray.
Rushing out the door, and we struggle to start the car
We will never make it - so we fear.
Finally we arrive and our boss taps his watch and says
"You can't be late. I thought I made that clear."
Filling out reports, forms and charts, spreadsheets, more reports
Til our work is coming out our ears.
Eyes are looking over our shoulder at all we do
We shout a cry that nobody hears.
Trying to get out of this endless insanity
A solution we can't seem to find.
So we do all that we can to get through each day
Making sure that we don't fall behind.
Could it be that one day we will be set free?
Not have to waste our time and effort stuck in this place.
Instead we're living on a treadmill
Feel like I'm running on a treadmill
Running hard but staying at a standstill
Might as well be living in an anthill
This is what we'll be until...
Now the workday's done, clocking out, to the parking lot
Now has come the time to hit the road.
Hoping to unwind on the drive, leave the day behind
But it can't remove the heavy load.
Chaos on the freeway with all going nowhere fast
Accidents, construction, no one moves.
This is not the way life was meant to be lived by us
Stress and heart conditions, this it proves.
Could it be that one day we will be set free?
Not have to waste our time and effort stuck in this place.
Instead we're living on a treadmill
Feel like I'm running on a treadmill
Running hard but staying at a standstill
Might as well be living in an anthill
This is what we'll be until...
Finally the weekend is here, hallelujah!
Now we can relax, enjoy the day.
But we have the work around the house, all the yardwork
This we have to do before we play.
Trying in the short time we have to get it done
How to do? We're racking our brain.
Finally we lay in our bed and we fall asleep
Waking up it's Monday again.
Oh yes we're living on a treadmill
Feel like I'm running on a treadmill
Running hard but staying at a standstill
Might as well be living in an anthill
Feeling like a piece of roadkill
Spinning around just like a windmill
Molding and rusting in a landfill
Getting shredded in a sawmill
This is what we'll be until...

Show the Love You Have
08:03
|
|||
We carry on every day, we plug along come what may,
As we play this game called life.
We get caught up in all affairs, in defense we put on airs,
It could be called the game of strife.
But many feel misunderstood. They feel that things are not so good,
They could use a salve.
They don't know if others care, if you have love than you should share
Show the love you have.
Just think of those of which you care, what have you that you can share,
To help them through these days?
A smile, a hug, a kind word, let them know that they are heard,
That you hear all their "hey"s.
Just think about when you are down, and you feel there's no one around,
What do you want most of all?
You hope that someone will reach out, and put an end to all your doubt,
Just act before they fall.
Life is difficult, with many shipwrecked on the sand
All they need is for someone to come and lend a hand.
Many feel as if they're lost at sea looking for land
All they need is for someone to come and lend a hand.
Let your friends know that you care, that you are glad that they are there
How special they are to you.
Cause life will try to beat them down, overwhelm them so they drown
So prove your love is true.

What do I do, now that I've lost you?
Where do I go? Oh, I don't know.
There's just a hole where once was the heart you stole.
What do I see? I see you without me.
Carrying on, with me long gone from your heart.
You were so cool, now I just feel like a fool.
Do I hang on? Do I let go? How do I carry on with my life?
I feel like all hope is gone, and that's stabbing me like a knife.
I thought that you would stay with me, be happy and free,
But I failed to see that you'd already left me behind
Both in your heart and in your mind.
So what do I do, now that I'm no longer with you?
And where do I go? Oh how am I supposed to know?
Wherever I go, whatever I do, I always find traces of you
I'm haunted by all that was, and now I am struggling because
I thought that you would stay with me, be happy and free,
But I was too blind to see that you'd already left me for dead
Both in your heart and in your head.
There was a time you'd smile at me
And our hearts would beat wildly
But now it breaks my heart as I realize I'll never see your smile again.
And add to that, I'm starting to think, I'll never see my smile again.
Oh no!

The Secret Place
08:33
|
|||
In the night when you lie in your bed
What remains? What thoughts play in your head?
Do memories of yesterday fill your mind?
Or do thoughts of tomorrow leave the past behind?
In those moments when nothing interferes
Where does your mind go when all disappears?
Are you haunted by failings? Or buoyed by joys?
To face what we find here, we have no choice.
There's a secret place deep inside of you
Filled with good and bad, what you've done, what you do
All your hopes, and dreams, and your fears here too
Some don't want to go there. If so, they're going nowhere.
What do you do with what you find in this place?
Is it an open book you share with the whole human race?
Or do you lock it away and remove the key?
Making sure it remains a mystery.
There's a secret place deep inside us all
It's the place that we go when we stand, when we fall
Some may hide in there if they're feeling small
Soon there'll be no pain there, for we will be somewhere.

The Cell

Take a look, see the man who's alone in his prison cell
There he sits, sits with his head in his hands
He is not allowed to have contact with anyone
Just a guard who abuses him everyday.
So he sits, wasting his time in this prison cell
His sentence is to be here for life
He looks up, sees the sky through the window above his head
It's the only thing that gets him through each day.
Can it be from me I must depart?
I am here imprisoned by my heart.
So he sits, thinking back to before his captivity
To a time when his life had more meaning than now
He was free, but he took for granted his freedom
But now, this life sentence changed that.
How can I from me now depart?
How can I be free from my own heart?
(Instrumental section)
So, what do you think is this jail cell?
Is it real, or only a trick of the mind?
And the bars, will they hold him securely forever?
And the key, is it something that he'll ever find?
How can I from me ever depart?
So I must work within the bounds of my own heart.

The Life of a Tree
16:51
|
|||
When you began, you were just a little seed falling, adrift on the wind
You fell to the ground, and kissing the earth, the rains falling,
Your life could begin
And you took root,
And you started inhaling your life from the ground underneath
And you survived, not being scorched by fire,
Nor trampled under our feet
You started to grow, stretching up to the sky, to the sun,
Through winter and spring
And you found your place, part of the ebb and flow,
The give and take of all things.
Now you are here, living longer than almost anything else on this earth
Ones see you in awe, in all your beauty and glory,
Who could value your worth?
There, there you stand so high, reaching toward the sky,
Looking down on birds flying by
You are a work of art, in truth you have a part,
Reflecting back the artists heart.
(Instrumental section)
I think of all you've seen in the course of your life
So much of history, you've seen things that we can only read about-
The rise and fall of kings and empires, battles fought and legends born
Friendships, fights and conflagrations, lovers meeting, lovers scorned
The births and deaths of saints and scoundrels,
Including some we could do without
Think of all the shade and shelter ones have sought
beneath your boughs
So many secrets told in the course of time
You've seen them all unfold, you could solve many mysteries, true
You could solve many crimes.
You know where things are hid, what things they did,
of things that we don't even know.
If you could only speak, tell us what you know
And tell us what you've seen,
You've seen so many things no longer around.
The California golden bear, the eastern elk, the golden toad
The passenger pidgeon, the dodo bird, the West African black rhino
Creatures that the people of this world will never see again
But you know what it was like to live in this world way back when.
If you could tell us all, all you've seen in your life,
Oh would the world be full?
